Torah Observance – Opposing God, Following Blind Men

Grant Swart

In keeping with previous articles on this blog regarding the Hebrew Roots Movement, the following article serves to further illustrate the severe and often deadly error in the religious teachings of the Hebrew Roots Movement (HRM). It clearly contrasts the deceiving practice of Torah Observance, as practiced by the HRM, against Christianity.

It draws our attention to the fact that the HRM does not complete or compliment Christianity, it does not fill in missing pieces, but rather it downplays and nullifies the atonement of Christ and overthrows the New Covenant and the perfect sacrifice of the Lamb of God. The teachings of the HRM remove all possibility of salvation by grace through faith.

The HRM and Christianity are not similar faiths that differ in non-essential aspects. The HRM and Christianity do not simply read from the same Book and interpret essential doctrines in different ways. Christianity does not lack that which is found in the practices and belief system of the HRM. Torah Observance is not an alternative form of Christianity and it cannot be practiced in conjunction with Christianity, it is a regressive form of religion in which there can be no forgiveness of sin or salvation.

The HRM distinctly opposes the very heart of the Gospel and their teachings and rituals are by no means biblical. By continuing to observe the Torah, they oppose God and follow blind men. Professor Malan states in the article: “What purpose will it serve if we start conforming to them [the HRM] while they still practise fulfilled and obsolete rituals which are devoid of the presence and light of the Messiah?”

The article has two sections. First is a call to Torah Observance from a Hebrew Roots perspective. The second part is a valuable summarized biblical refutation of the deceptive teachings and beliefs of those who hold to Torah Observance in the HRM.

Torah Observance

The following is a call to Torah observance by believers:

The Holy One is not a cruel taskmaster, and His Wonderful Words of Torah are not some burdensome system of laws we should seek to avoid or escape. They are instead a beautiful Divinely-illuminated pathway of life, health and peace which we should run to embrace. See Psalm 119:12, 18, 20, 24, 35 and 47.

Every syllable of each story in the grand narratives of Torah as well as every single Hebrew letter of every single Divine Pronouncement found in Torah contains a precious, precious gift which the Holy One had bestowed upon mankind out of the depths of both His Great Wisdom and His Great Love.  See Psalm 19:7-11.

In His precious Torah the Holy One both challenges and empowers all persons who enter Covenant with Him to become people of ever-increasing beauty and purity. Torah is His protocol for the Ultimate Divine Bridal Make-Over through which He intends to transform ordinary human beings like us from a motley crew of self-centered slaves and shrews to a fitting help-meet for Himself – a Bride without spot, wrinkle, blemish, or any such thing.  Psalm 119:9, 11, 97-105.

Part of the changes the Holy One intends to bring about in us are internal; merely changing the inside of us, however, will not be nearly enough to accomplish His lofty Purposes for us nor to testify to the world of His amazing goodness, grace, and love. He therefore sets out to change the outside of us as well as the inside of us. To demonstrate His Manifest Wisdom, Power, and Artistry the beauty and purity He is calling forth from His Beloved ones simply must be both internal and external.

The natural product of ever-increasing consecration to the Holy One and ever-increasing immersion in His Word and His Ways.

So, are the meditations of your heart and the thoughts of your mind ever-increasing in beauty and wisdom?

Are the words of your mouth and the expressions of your face toward others ever-increasing in beauty and grace?

Are the garments and ornaments you wear ever-increasing in beauty and modesty?

And is your dwelling place ever-increasing in beauty and hospitality?

Mah tovu ohalecha Ya’akov, mishkanotecha Yisra’el? [How lovely are your tents, O Jacob – your dwelling places, Israel?]

What is our part in the process the Holy One has set in motion for internal and external transformation? It is our inestimable privilege to actually cooperate with Him and with His Make-Over protocol on both internal and external level.

Neither the beauty nor the purity He calls forth from us is something we must create – His Words of Life themselves are fully capable of accomplishing this in us. All He calls forth from us is respect and some cooperation.

Why on earth would we not respect Him Who has done so much for us? Why in the world would we not want to cooperate with Him?

Ah Beloved, it seems there is a little bit of slave and a whole lot of shrew in the best of us.

It is a perplexing phenomenon that so many sincere believers in Christ would become devoted Torah observers during New Testament times. Rather than becoming Messiah worshippers of the New Covenant, they portray Yeshua as the ultimate example of Torah worship and the One who merely died as the Lamb of God to atone for the sins of those who are in contravention of the Law. The entire spiritual orientation of these people is not only determined by the Torah, but also severely restricted by it.

The fact is that the Messiah has fulfilled the Law. He said: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfil” (Matt. 5:17). According to the Strong’s Concordance, the word fulfil (Greek: pleroo) means “to finish (a period or task) … accomplish … complete, end, expire, fill up, fulfil, make full”.

Is it so hard for people to understand that Yeshua has fulfilled the Torah in every respect, thereby accomplishing the task which no other human being could do? The standard of holiness required by the Torah was beyond the reach of all Israelites who lived under the Old Covenant and consequently condemned them because of their repeated sins which are all breaches of God’s Law: “The soul who sins shall die” (Ezek. 18:20).

The Lord Jesus did not abolish and destroy the Law as there is nothing bad or unethical about the Law. In His sinless life Christ was the epitome of Law observance. However, He brought a complete end to the dispensation of the Law since the Law became a curse to all people who failed to comply with its demands, “for the law made nothing perfect” (Heb. 7:19). AllIsrael’s efforts towards Law observance were in vain; neither could their sins be forgiven through animal sacrifices, “for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Heb. 10:4). They were in a spiritual wilderness.

The Messiah then introduced the New Covenant in His blood (1 Cor. 11:24-25). This covenant completely replaced the old one, which had expired. The Old Covenant’s demands were not met, and its sacrifices were only of a typological nature, pending fulfilment by the once for all sacrifice of the Lamb of God.

Far from stating that the Law and the Prophets are irrelevant under the New Covenant, we say that their demands were fully met by the Messiah; consequently, we can only meet God’s standard of justification and sanctification by embracing the new life which is offered to us through Yeshua. He is the expression of God’s love and righteousness, and the only Saviour of lost humanity. He is full of grace and truth (John 1:14; 3:16); “for in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Col. 2:9).

We are regenerated by the Holy Spirit when we receive Christ as our Saviour by faith, and the agape love of God is also poured out in our hearts by His Spirit (Rom. 3:24-25; 5:5). What a wonderful gift of God’s grace! If our behaviour is guided by divine love we are in Christ and have therefore fulfilled the Law and no longer need the written code of the law: “Love … is the fulfilment of the Law” (Rom. 13:8-10). In fact, we are supposed to live on a spiritual level which is far beyond the demands of the law. The dynamics of agape love are such that we are enabled to pursue lofty ideals of Godliness which are not even mentioned in the Law, e.g. perfect holiness, continued prayer, being witnesses for Christ, to be the salt and light of the world, to prevail over all the power of the enemy, and to be more than conquerors in Christ.

If we restrict ourselves to the level of Old Testament Law observance we will miss many of the great blessings which Yeshua has prepared for us under the New Covenant. When Paul challenges the Ephesians towards greater Godliness he does not even once refer to Law observance, but only to the need of being filled with the Holy Spirit, and to be established in the power and love of Him who has fulfilled the Law:

“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ … that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height; to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Eph. 3:14-19).

Those who are truly rooted in His love have fulfilled the Law and therefore only observe the New Testament law (or principle) of love (Matt. 22:36-40; John 13:34). All other commands in the New Testament emanate from our obligation to follow Christ by walking in the Spirit and leading a life which is in accordance with Christ’s nature of divine love instilled in us by His Holy Spirit. We are in a relationship with the Messiah who has fulfilled the Law – not in a relationship with the Law.

Reverting now to the statements in support of Law observance in the introduction, it is obvious that the author is seriously in error in the following respects:

1.    In order to attain the “Divinely-illuminated pathway of life” he only refers his readers to Psalm 119, without even once mentioning the only One who is “the way, the truth and the life”, and though Whom alone the lofty ideals of a godly life can be realised. In fact, in his entire discourse on godliness there is not a single reference to Yeshua or any New Testament statements.

2.    He perpetuates the Old Covenant under the Torah, despite the fact that Paul clearly states that we are no longer under the law but under the Messiah’s grace in the New Testament (Rom. 6:14; 10:4; Gal. 5:4). He also says that the Law prepares the bride of Christ: “In His precious Torah the Holy One both challenges and empowers all persons who enter Covenant with Him to become people of ever-increasing beauty and purity. Torah is His protocol for the Ultimate Divine Bridal Make-Over…” How is it possible that the Messiah’s work of grace is not mentioned with regard to sanctification? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to quote the following Scripture? “Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” (Eph. 5:25-27; cf. 2 Cor. 11:2). Instead of emphasising the pre-eminence of Christ’s redemptive work through His atoning death, the author underscores the role of the Torah as God’s protocol for a divine make-over. “Protocol” refers to a set of rules and formalities according to which something must be done. In terms of this deceptive argument we should be guided by the rules and procedures of the Law. Where do the Messiah, the cross and the work of the Holy Spirit come in? If the latter are significant to him, he should at least have made some mention of them.

3.    The very common mistake among Hebrew Roots supporters is to exalt and imitate Israel, in stead of exalting and following Yeshua. They endeavour to become more like Israel, also in respect of Law observance (Old Testament feasts like the Sabbath, etc). The author expresses this approach as follows: “Mah tovu ohalecha Ya’akov, mishkanotecha Yisra’el? [How lovely are your tents, O Jacob – your dwelling places, Israel?]. What is our part in the process the Holy One has set in motion for internal and external transformation? It is our inestimable privilege to actually cooperate with Him and with His Make-Over protocol on both internal and external level.” As in the previous instances, the Messiah does not even feature in his appeal towards Godliness; neither did he feel the need to quote from the New Testament.

Hopefully, devoted Christians will realise that we are not called upon to become more conformed to Israel and their Torah oriented culture, but instead to become more like the Messiah. Because of their unbelief, Israel (the natural branches of the olive tree) were cut off and Gentiles (branches of the wild olive tree) were grafted into the trunk of the olive tree. The trunk of the olive tree refers to the Messiah, who is the Root of David (Rev. 22:16). He is the seed of Abraham through whom all nations would be blessed (Gal. 3:14). The Messiah is the source of our blessing – notIsrael. In as far as believing Israelites are servants of the Lord they are indeed a blessing to us (Rom.3:1-3), but the true source of our blessing is the Holy One of Israel. We are grafted into Him, much in the same way in which John says that the disciples of Christ are like branches grafted into the true vine, Jesus Christ (John 15:1-8).

Paul says: “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfil its lusts” (Rom. 13:14; cf. Gal. 4:19). Our command is to provokeIsraelto jealousy by the way in which we serve the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through the Messiah (Rom. 11:11). They should become more like us, not the other way round. What purpose will it serve if we start conforming to them while they still practise fulfilled and obsolete rituals which are devoid of the presence and light of the Messiah?

  1. Excellent article! The human default position is works. Works and legalism go hand in hand. All religions except Christianity are based on works. That is what makes Christianity so unique, it is based on the finished work of Christ alone! Not on the works of man. Galations 3: 1-3 reminds us of that fact. You foolish Galations, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you; did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfectd by the flesh? vs 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us – for it is written, Cursed is every one who hangs on a tree. Thank you for pointing out the error of the Hebrew Roots Movement. It is the same temptation the early Christians were faced with. We can’t go back to the Law, legalism, works. It is through:
    Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone
    Solus Christus – Christ Alone
    Sola Gratia – Grace Alone
    Sola Fide – Faith Alone
Soli Deo Gloria – The Glory of God Alone

    • Far beyond keeping the Old Testament commandments, Jesus was the Creator of all things before time, in eternity. God made His commandments clear so that transgressions could be understood, He did not give us His commandments in order for us to be saved by keeping them. From Adam until this day, including Old Testament saints, all who are saved, are saved by Faith, not by keeping the commandments.

God does not need to keep His own commandments, God is by His very nature Perfect, He does not need to prove His sovereignty by such mere actions. Far beyond His keeping His own commandments, He gave them, He fulfilled them and He enabled those, whom He calls by His Grace to faith in Jesus Christ, to escape the eternal punishment for breaking those commandments.

Whether we keep the commandments is as irrelevant today as it was when Jesus reprimanded the Pharisees for basing their religion on them, rather than believing in Him as the Saviour.

To question whether Jesus kept His own commandments is to insinuate that God had to earn His own salvation by keeping to His own commandments.

To question a true believer in Jesus Christ as to whether they keep the commandments, is equal to expecting them to be as self-righteous and unbelieving as the Pharisees. Rather, the question should be whether a person has heard the Gospel, and believed the Gospel. You will be able to test their answer by their fruit.

  2. Matthew 5
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Many Christians are miinformed about what messianic or Hebrew Roots Movements belive.
Think about what the scriptures above really say and mean. Shalom

Thank you for commenting here. You have quoted from specific Scriptures which, from a biblical and Christian perspective, disprove your distinct and exact point. I fail to understand why you choose to quote from these Words which were spoken by Jesus Christ, in an attempt to qualify that which the HRM stands for!

In reference to your application of Matthew 5:18 we must consider the following: If the law of Moses bears the same relationship to men of today, in terms of its binding status, then it was not fulfilled, and Jesus failed at what He came to do. In your opinion, did Jesus fail in that, Reuben? If not, then Reuben, you must admit that, if the Lord did accomplish His goal, then the law was fulfilled, and it is not a binding legal institution today.

Further, if the law of Moses was not fulfilled by Christ — and thus remains as a binding legal system for today — then it is not just partially binding. Rather, then it is a totally compelling system. Jesus plainly said that not one “jot or tittle” (representative of the smallest markings of the Hebrew script) would pass away until all was fulfilled. Consequently, nothing of the law was to fail until it had completely accomplished its purpose. Jesus fulfilled the law in its entirety, my friend. Jesus fulfilled all of the law and more. Therefore, that which you may very well be waiting for to appear in the future or as a result of your religion, Reuben, has already come, over 2000 years ago.

The law has been fulfilled in relation to your verse of choice. We cannot say that Jesus fulfilled the sacrificial system, but did not fulfill the other aspects of the law. Jesus either fulfilled all of the law, or none of it. What Jesus’ death means for the sacrificial system, it also means for the other aspects of the law, or do you disregard Jesus’ perfect sacrifice as insufficient?

Truly saved Christians cannot be misinformed about their salvation, because God Himself facilitated that salvation. Would He have intentionally kept His children lost in darkness, after sacrificing His Son on behalf of those who believe in Him, and while watching those children flounder around in their dying throes, constantly in a state of legalistic panic while trying to comply with the impossible requirements of the Mosaic Law?

Furthermore, you quote from Matthew 5:20 which says that, unless our righteousness is greater than that of the Pharisees and scribes, we will not be able to enter into heaven. In other words, even if we are as “good” as the Pharisees, or as “learned” in the Law as the scribes, we will not be able to enter into heaven. We have to be better than either of those, our righteousness has to exceed theirs. How could we ever wish to do that? By our own means, by keeping to the Law better that what they, as the experts, could?

Neither you nor I, could ever succeed at the challenge to prove ourselves worthy of Gods acceptance into the eternal Kingdom of God. A “pharisaical” righteousness will never bring a person to heaven; nor will any righteousness of man’s, irrespective of how good it may seem, because even our best is imperfect.

Only the righteousness of Christ, which is imputed to the believer and which is received by faith, is infinitely more excellent in its author, perfection, purity, and use; and is their only right and title to eternal glory; and without which no man will be admitted into that glorious state.

I challenge you to read what the Bible says, and ignore it at your peril. If you wish to replace Gods Word with a legalistic religion based on man-made morals and other laws which have been fulfilled, you do so knowingly. I ensure you that Jesus Christ is the Saviour. He has done what neither you, nor I, could ever do in paying the price for our souls. Believe in Him and be saved, not in what you, nor any religious system could ever accomplish.

      • To say Jesus is THE savior i think we can all agree. But is He Lord (master)? We’re we bought at a great price? Or was His supreme act of love a common thing so we can continue in the very sin that he died to redeem us from?

What is sin? 1 John 3:4
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

We can all agree that the law defines what sin is. The law tells us what is right and what is wrong. It is Gods instructions to us, that is what Torah (translated law) really means.

We all have sinned and fallen short. So then how is one saved? Repentance and faith. If we believe God, then we WILL turn from our ways towards His way. Because we are changed! Throughout the bible OT and NT God says if you love me keep my commandments. Keeping His instructions is how we love Him. We don’t keep his commands for salvation, we keep them because He first loved us.

Jesus paid the penalty for breaking His law. The curse. He became that curse. Men of history past believed that God would save them but didn’t know exactly how. They had faith! We are blessed to know how that was accomplished and we have faith! Everyone who will enter heaven will have entered by faith!

        Amos 3:3
Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

2 Cor 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

        1 John 1:6-7
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

How can we walk with Christ? How can we be in agreement? By keeping His commandments! Note it says KEEP, it doesn’t say OBEY. (Strongs h8104 shamar) To keep means to guard/protect, observe, give heed. We are to read, study, meditate on the word! Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God! God then writes His word on our hearts, he changes our heart! He never says He will change His way! He says the opposite in Psalms 119:142
Thy righteousness [is] an everlasting righteousness, and thy law [is] the truth.

I believe in absolute truth, do you? David said that righteousness (what is right according to God) is everlasting! david also says God’s law is the truth, did truth change? Also according to 2 Timothy 3:16 what David wrote was actually inspired by God…

As we meditate on His words, The Truth, they will become our words and our thoughts! We will walk with Him in agreement!

      • Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

We all have sinned and fallen short. So then how is one saved? Repentance and faith. If we believe God, then we WILL turn from our ways towards His way.

Every sinner, loved, chosen, redeemed and called to salvation by the sovereign grace of God shall be saved, ALL of them and none BUT them. Every sinner who believes on the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved.

Anyone in all the world who calls upon the name of the Lord, who trusts the Lord Jesus Christ because they have been enabled by His Holy Spirit, shall be saved. The promise is made without condition or exception. The promise is not dependent on our keeping the law, which no one can do and which is why it was necessary for Christ to do it on behalf of those whom He saves. If our salvation was in any way dependent on our efforts, none would be saved.

If I trust the Lord Jesus Christ, I shall be saved. If you trust him, you shall be saved.

How can we walk with Christ? How can we be in agreement? By keeping His commandments!

No, not by keeping His commandments, for as you have already stated, all have fallen short. ’All’ includes those who keep the law, because even they have fallen short. If we all have fallen short, then we all have sinned and therefore we all deserve death as punishment. It stands to reason that we cannot walk with Christ by our own efforts at keeping His commandments.

Keeping His commandments, by our own means, will not place us at His side. No adherence to any commandment could take away our sinful state, or make us holier before God. Only Jesus Christ in the believer can be regarded as sinless before an Almighty Holy God. We can only be in agreement with God, by the impartation of His Son’s Holiness, the righteousness of the Saviour Jesus Christ, to us.

In Romans 10:13 we are given a declaration regarding man’s responsibility. God Almighty is totally Sovereign in the salvation of sinners; and we are, every one of us, responsible to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. We are not responsible, for our salvation, to observe Old Testament law, because we cannot, because Jesus Christ already fulfilled all the requirements of the law. In what way could we add to His Perfect atonement? We can only perform the responsibility of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, by the Spirit of God in us.

      • Grant I believe the issue here is that we are making “obedience to God’s commandment a prerequisite for salvation.” I think we can both agree to the fact that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus alone.

However the question then becomes “do we throw away God’s absolute truth/ God’s sin dictionary/God’s Believers’ living manual after we are saved?” or as Paul put it eloquently “Do we then nullify the Law through faith?” (Romans 3:31)

His and my answer would be; “May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.”

The problem was, is and will always be us—humans. (until we get that glorified sinless body)
The problem wasn’t, isn’t and never will be the perfect, holy, righteous and SPIRITUAL Law of God.

“So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.” [Romans 7:12, 14]

There’s no reason to “throw away” the Holy Law of God, because …well frankly it IS the Word of God.

It was given not to the unrighteous (who will think it’s foolishness)
“But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” [1 Corinthians 2:14]

It’s only those who have their mindset on the fleshly things that are not able to subject themselves to the commandments of God.

On the other hand, those who have been born again (born from above, born of the Spirit) ARE Spiritual and can therefore joyfully concur with the Spiritual Law of God!

“because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. [Romans 8:7-9]

“For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,” [Romans 7:25]

We don’t strive for obedience to the Holy Law of God – as unbelievers/unrighteous, so as to merit salvation….
…Rather because we have been saved/redeemed/bought/born from the Spirit do we now have the power through the Spirit to walk according to His Spiritual Word!

        God bless!

I think what you have written here is in agreement with my comment, I see no reason to differ with your words. As long as we do not pursue a works-based righteousness or accredit our salvation to any form of legalism, denominational tradition or religious ritual, and in accordance with a correct understanding of the Words of the Lord in Matt 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

Your questions do not make any real sense. I don’t quite understand what you are asking.

        To answer them simply:
        1. Christian faith is not pagan magic, it is the direct opposite of pagan magic.
        2. The Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit is God, the third person in the triune Godhead along with God the Father and God the Son. Knowing, doing and teaching the Torah has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit or with Christian faith.

  3. {Luke 16:17} “But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.”
    {Matthew 5:18}
“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”
Both of these passages are rather clear in speaking of the permanence of God’s Holy Instructions.

They literally tell us that God’s Words will NOT pass away until heaven and earth does. Revelation 21:1 tells us that even this is something literal that WILL happen.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.”

God’s Instructions for His people don’t expire, just like He doesn’t. Genesis through Revelation were, are and will continue to be His perfect, holy, righteous, true guidelines that are profitable for teaching, reproof, correction and our training in righteosness, so that we as God’s people may be adequate and equipped for every good work! 🙂 (2 Tim 3:16-17)

It is important to read verse 17 of Matthew 5 along with verse 18, as it was all part of the same message Jesus gave to His hearers. In verse 17 we have Jesus explaining that He had indeed come to accomplish all the requirements of the Law. Jesus says: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

God’s Holy instructions are indeed permanent, and nothing passed from the Law until all had been accomplished, and all has already been accomplished by the perfect atonement made by Jesus Christ Himself.

Christ did not suggest here that the binding nature of the law of Moses would remain forever in effect. Such a view would contradict everything we learn from the balance of the New Testament. See these verses which confirm that God’s Law has been fulfilled:

(Rom 10:4) For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

(Gal 3:23-24) Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.

(Eph 2:14-16) For He Himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

Christ fulfilled all the demands of the Mosaic law, which called for perfect obedience under threat of a “curse”: (Gal 3:10) For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”

If the law of Moses is still in effect on men today, in terms of its binding status, then it was not fulfilled, and Jesus failed at what He came to do. On the other hand, if the Lord did accomplish His goal, then the law was fulfilled, and it is not a binding legal institution today.

Further, if the law of Moses was not fulfilled by Christ—and thus remains as a binding legal system for today—then it is not just partially binding. Rather, it is a totally compelling system. Jesus plainly said that not one “jot or tittle” (representative of the smallest markings of the Hebrew script) would pass away until all was fulfilled.

Consequently, nothing of the law was to fail until it had completely accomplished its purpose. Jesus fulfilled the law. Jesus fulfilled all of the law.

      • How can you say that ALL has already been accomplished in the light of passages such as Acts 3:18-21? It clearly tells us that YES part of what was prophesied about Him has been accomplished, but He is coming back for part 2. In fact, the very fact that He IS coming back for some unfinished business is enough proof that not ALL is accomplished. It is a common misconception.
        18. “But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.
        19. “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
        20. and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you,
        21. whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time.
The period of restoration of all things is yet to come!

The Greek word telos used in Romans 10:4 is correctly translated as “goal” and not end. Christ was, is and will always be the goal of the Law. This is why He said “for if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” (John 5:46-47)

Gal 3:23-24: When would you say that faith came?

Ephesians 2:14-16: two quick points. 1. the word ordinances here is the Greek word “dogma” which is ALWAYS used to define man-made rules and regulations, and never in reference to God’s Holy Laws. Paul mentions that whatever these rules were, they created a wall of hostility between Jew and Gentile. If I remember correctly, nowhere in the Law of God is there EVER any commandments that create hostility between believers, in fact what the Law DOES teach is that you shall love strangers and treat them as if they were natives. (Leviticus 19:34) `The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God. In fact, any Gentile who joined themselves to the God of Israel were not kept as strangers, but became part of the Ekklesia of God, following His ways. From the mixed multitudes that left with them out of Egypt to every single one that is grafted in among them (Rom 11:17) today.

A believer’s relationship with the Law of God differs GREATLY from the relationship of an unbeliever’s.
As a believer born from above, I like Paul, joyfully concur with the Law of God, confessing that the Law of God is perfect, eternal, holy, righteous, true and a blessed gift given by God to His people.

You are confusing Old Testament Law with prophecy regarding that which is yet to come. Jesus Christ will return, just as certainly as He was here in the flesh at His first coming.

Nowhere did I state that ALL had been accomplished, as that would allude to the fact that nothing could exist beyond the death and resurrection of Jesus, yet in truth, we are still here in the flesh on this earth. If ALL had been accomplished, things which are to take place tomorrow would already have taken place, an illogical concept.

What the Scriptures do state, is that ALL the requirements of the LAW have been accomplished by Christ, including those in Leviticus. Believers are no longer under the Law, but under Grace. The Law cannot save the sinner, for all are saved by Grace (Eph 2:8).

If, in Romans 10:4, the word telos is translated as “goal”, which would not be incorrect, it would make no difference to the meaning of the verse or to what Jesus accomplished in satisfying the requirements of the Law, on our behalf.

If you are a believer in Christ, then you will by necessity joyfully concur that Christ perfectly fulfilled all the requirements of the Law of God, and that Christ set believers free from the Law, the same Law which kills and cannot bring life. All the Scriptures which indicate that, and which I quoted in the previous comment, were made by Paul.

The Law represents a curse for all those who cannot abide by it perfectly, not a blessed gift (Gal 3:10). No natural person has the ability to abide by the Law. Salvation by Grace through Faith in Jesus Christ alone, is the blessed and free gift.

Why would one wish to deny that Jesus Christ died to pay for all one’s sins? How does one propose to become sinless before a Holy and Sovereign God by your one’s own filthy efforts to save oneself?

  4. [You are confusing Old Testament Law with prophecy regarding that which is yet to come. Jesus Christ will return, just as certainly as He was here in the flesh at His first coming.]
I’m actually interpreting the passage exactly as Messiah taught it, in other words, Not even the smallest stroke of this Law will pass away until ALL is accomplished (and heaven and earth pass). Whether it’s Hebrew, Greek or English, the message is the same. The perfect Law of God will not pass away until everything is accomplished.

[Nowhere did I state that ALL had been accomplished]
Exactly, but THAT is what Matthew 5:18 states.

[What the Scriptures do state, is that ALL the requirements of the LAW have been accomplished by Christ, including those in Leviticus.]
What do you mean with requirements of the Law? For instance let’s take “you shall not steal” How does one fulfill the “requirements” of this commandment, and what effect does the “fulfilled requirement” have on the believer? Is the believer now free to steal, because some “requirement” was fulfilled by the Messiah?

[Believers are no longer under the Law, but under Grace. The Law cannot save the sinner, for all are saved by Grace (Eph 2:8).]
No true believer is under the law. Agreed. But all believers in the Scriptures followed and strove to keep the Instructions of God. Think about what you are saying; David was saved by grace through faith, just like you and I were, yet He obeyed and loved walking in God’s Commandments. Why?

[The Law represents a curse for all those who cannot abide by it perfectly, not a blessed gift (Gal 3:10). No natural person has the ability to abide by the Law.]
Romans 8:7-9 deals with exactly that. It goes back to whether you are a believer or unbeliever, because as verse 7 tells us, those who have their minds set on the flesh are hostile toward God and unable to subject themselves to the Law of God. HOWEVER those who have been born from above are NOT in the flesh but in the Spirit. It is only if we are walking in the Spirit that we, like Paul can say that the Law is holy, righteous and good. It’s only when we are in the Spirit that we can confess that the Law is Spiritual. IT is only when we are in the Spirit that we can serve the Law of God. (Rom. 7)

[Why would one wish to deny that Jesus Christ died to pay for all one’s sins?]
There’s a big difference between accepting that He died to pay for all of our offenses, and believing that He died to abolish His Father’s Holy Commandments.

[How does one propose to become sinless before a Holy and Sovereign God by your one’s own filthy efforts to save oneself?]
Never did I mention anything whatsoever regarding salvation through the Law. I am simply arguing that the Scriptures are clear that the Law of God, as part of God’s Word did, do and will always continue to be our standard of Righteous Living, profitable for reproof, correction and our training in righteousness. I’m talking about using the Instructions of God as a guideline to holy living, NOT for salvation.

    • Albertini, either we are not exactly on the same page or you are applying circular reasoning. I have already answered your questions in detail.

Like David, all believers should love walking in God’s Commandments, but just like David, no believer can be saved by keeping God’s Commandments. Holy living cannot bring about our salvation.

As far as abolishing His Father’s law is concerned, I repeat again as before: (Matt 5:17): “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” This indicates that before He came, the Law and the Prophets were of different effect and we were of a different standing before them. Jesus fulfilled all the requirements of the Law, or do you disregard the way the Messiah taught these things? Are you of the opinion that the Messiah did not succeed in fulfilling ALL of the Law, as He said He would and as the prophets said He would?

IT is only when we are in the Spirit that we can serve the Law of God.

Any person, believer or unbeliever can serve the Law of God. The unregenerate person who decides not to murder his neighbour, or decides not to steal his employer’s time, or does not give in to the temptation to commit adultery, is serving the Law of God, but He does not know God. The unregenerate person is not in the Spirit, yet he can serve the Law of God. If we serve the Law, we serve that which kills us. We must serve Christ, not the Law.

It is only when we are in the Spirit, that God will not hold the Law against us, because we have been justified and sanctified by the Blood of His Son, we have been washed clean, we have been made new, our sins have been paid for, we are no longer under the Law, because we cannot keep the Law. Even our best deeds are filthy, no matter how hard we try to live Holy lives, we remain filthy in the eyes of God, when we are without Christ. In the believer who has been saved by Grace, God does not see our sin and our filthiness, He sees only the imparted righteousness of His Son.

      • Hi Grant, Thanks for the info. I have been doing allot of study on the HRM and it is confusing at times becouse they seem to have an answer for everything according to Scripture. Many times I do not agree on how they are trying to apply Scripture, but I believe you have to show why a passage is being interpreted correctly or incorrectly. Albertini made a statment about Rom 10:4 “is correctly translated as goal and not end” Is this true? And went on to say “Christ was,is and will always be the goal of the Law” What was Albertini implying? You did not address his question on Gal 3:23-24 and two points on Eph 2:14-16 or the grafting in Rom 11:17. I am trying to answer thease myself, what do you think? Thank you.

I have been doing allot of study on the HRM and it is confusing at times…

While I agree that it is good to know about false religious teachings and movements such as the HRM, I would caution that you not spend too much time in studying such falsehoods. It is pointless and destructive and one tends to become pre-occupied with things of that nature. It would be far more edifying for one to study the Truth in Scripture with one’s available time and in that way, once the Truth is understood, all the false teachings and evil doctrines will be clearly identified.

…they seem to have an answer for everything according to Scripture

If the false religions and false teachings were blatantly obvious, and if they did not seem to be backed up by Scripture, no one would believe them or could be misled by them. For that reason, the error and deceptions of HRM and others seem to be according to Scripture on the surface and why they so easily confuse people. Error does not have to be gross to be damning. Heretical teachings are so very dangerous because they creep in unnoticed. Trust in Christ and His Word to provide you with a correct understanding of Scripture.

…but I believe you have to show why a passage is being interpreted correctly or incorrectly

Christians are under no obligation to “do” or “show” anything, as a matter of Biblical fact, whatever we do ourselves is evil and filthy, outside of Christ. As He died on the Cross our Lord said: “It is finished”, everything has been done, we cannot add to that by what we do or by our petty little explanations. Those in the HRM refuse to believe that Jesus Christ was the completion of the Law, the Finisher of our faith. They believe that man still has a role to play in salvation by keeping the Law. That is heretical and damning doctrine.

Regarding Romans 10:4, I answered Albertini:
If, in Romans 10:4, the word telos is translated as “goal”, which would not be incorrect, it would make no difference to the meaning of the verse or to what Jesus accomplished in satisfying the requirements of the Law, on our behalf.
The following is from the Hebrew and Greek Dictionary, which gives us the meaning of the word telos. When a goal is reached, it is the end of the action:
“telos”: From a primary word τέλλω tellō (to set out for a definite point or goal); properly the point aimed at as a limit, that is, (by implication) the conclusion of an act or state (termination [literally, figuratively or indefinitely], result [immediate, ultimate or prophetic], purpose); specifically an impost or levy (as paid): – + continual, custom, end (-ing), finally, uttermost.

And went on to say “Christ was,is and will always be the goal of the Law” What was Albertini implying?

If one cannot interpret the meaning of a word, and if that word is central to the message held within the passage, then by implication, one cannot gain an understanding of the passage. If Christ was not the end (goal reached) of the Law, then He accomplished nothing, and we are all headed for hell. If, however, it is true what Scripture tells us that Christ fulfilled all the requirements of the Law, then those whom He called to believe in Him by means of His grace, are no longer under the Law and Christ is truly the Saviour, the beloved Son of God.

You did not address his question on Gal 3:23-24

He asked for my opinion regarding when faith came. It is what Scripture says that matters, not what I say, which is why I did not answer his contentious question. He also left out verses 25-29, which cannot be read in isolation from verses 23-24. Gal 3: 25 answers his question clearly.

…points on Eph 2:14-16 or the grafting in Rom 11:17

The paragraph which Albertini wrote regarding Eph 2:14-16 and Rom 11:17 is full of Biblically incorrect theology and is foundationally erroneous. To address the points he makes, one would have to go back to the beginning of the Gospel to clarify why he misrepresents the passages he has quoted. Albertini places such great importance on the Law, that I’m not sure he believes the Gospel at all. He underlines the fact that the word “dogma” indicates man-made rules and that those rules created a wall of hostility between Jews and Gentiles.

He is correct in explaining that, however, the problem with that wall was not that God wanted to unite Gentiles into or with the Jews, but that God wanted to unite both Gentiles and Jews as one people with Himself through Christ. Jesus fulfilled the law, thus abolishing the difference between Jew and Gentile “so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross…” (Eph 2:15-16)

Albertini also stated that “…any Gentile who joined themselves to the God of Israel were not kept as strangers…” Held within that statement is the incorrect and heretical assumption that a Gentile (or any person for that matter), can join themselves to God by choice or by their free-will and actions. That is not possible, man cannot choose God, even more so, man will not choose God.

Man cannot graft himself into, as Albertini calls it, “the Ekklesia of God”, meaning the assembly, congregation or true church. Christians are grafted into Jesus Christ by the Sovereign will of God, through His Grace. If Gentiles are grafted into Israel, becoming Jews, as it seems Albertini is alluding to by his use of Rom 17:11, the purpose and picture of both Jew and Gentile, coming together as one new man, is lost. God never intended Gentiles to become one in Israel, but for both Jews and Gentiles to become one in Christ.

  5. Please let us all remain in the Lord that He remains in us. As we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, He by The Holy Spirit is committed to finish the good work He started in us. The moment we start debating on matters such as opposing HRM we are headed for confusion which the devil loves. Let us remember Paul’s word of encouragement…..let no one judge you by the food you eat….let all be done for the glory of God. I sincerely believe that if I keep the Sabbath for the glory of God, God will not have me go to hell because I have failed to observe Torah feasts etc etc yet they are all provided for in the Torah. Paul said let all be done for the glory of God. What God does in His children, He gives grace for it to happen because it is His power that works in us to will to do of His good pleasure, there is no pressure to perform but grace facilitates results so that no flesh can glory in this day and age in the presence of God.

Can someone educate us on SUN…….day WORSHIP please. I really need to hear more on this subject to gain more understanding.

No need for confusion. Those who are able to understand, have the Word of God, which does not spread confusion, but understanding and unity among believers. The same Paul you mention also said the following, which indicates clearly how and why we are to oppose movements such as the HRM, and to make sure that other believers (verse 2:13b interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual) are not caught up in their traps, and other similar traps. See in particular verse 15:

1Co 2:12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
1Co 2:13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
1Co 2:14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
1Co 2:15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.
1Co 2:16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Can someone educate us on SUN…….day WORSHIP please. I really need to hear more on this subject to gain more understanding.

God willing, I will do an article on this subject in the near future, which will provide you with some of the history of the Sabbath day, and the Sunday “Sabbath” which has become the day which most Christian churches have set aside for sermon preaching and fellowship. Suffice to say at this juncture that we as Christians should regard every day as precious and a gift to us according to the gracious providence of God, which we do not deserve but which we have been granted to richly enjoy according to the Will of God. Let us regard every day as equally important in which we remember what our Lord Jesus has done in paying for the sins of those who believe in Him.

Many Christians worship on Sundays in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is very important to remember, though, Sunday worship is not commanded in the Bible, and Sunday has not replaced Saturday and become the Christian Sabbath. While the New Testament describes Christians gathering and worshipping on Sundays, it nowhere states that Sunday has replaced Saturday as the Sabbath. They key point in all of this is that we are not to limit our worship to any particular day of the week. We are to rest in the Lord every day. We are to worship the Lord every day.

I agree we are to edify and discuss things, but as far as Albertini’s last comments are concerned they have already been discussed , further up Grant explained “Albertini, either we are not exactly on the same page or you are applying circular reasoning.” this was the case, hence the removal of the comments.

        You say there is always room to learn more and I agree, however it is clear we cannot agree with the Torah’s teachings that is grounded in the Hebrew Roots movement. I am not so sure if we should debate Scripture the Word says : Titus 3:9-10 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. (10) A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;

Now we know the Hebrew Roots/Sacred Name movement is heretical and not Biblical.

I think it is good to continue to reason, examine or debate the scriptures to come to the truth.

You are correct in that believers should continue to edify one another, which is also one of the main reasons for the existence of the church. However, believers cannot be edified by false teachings, nor can we come to the truth by examining or debating lies.

Albertini has made it clear that he rejects the fundamental teachings of the New Testament and that he prefers to remain under the judgment of Old Testament Law. This despite all the effort I have made in pointing out that fatal error. We cannot allow those who follow false teachings to continue to promote those views indefinitely.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are tasked with providing the truth as held within the Gospel, to those who have ears to hear, to edify and to build one another up. We cannot provide a platform for those who reject and oppose the Sovereign, perfect and complete work of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The view which Albertini expresses is not the Christian view, but rather that of a legalist.

Thank you referring to Acts 18:28, an appropriate Scripture for this subject. This passage shows clearly that Jesus Himself used the Old Testament to prove that He was indeed the Christ, who had come to put an end to the curse which the Law had placed over men.

In the synagogue (publicly), Jesus refuted the beliefs held by the Jews, the followers of the Law. The beliefs which Jesus powerfully refuted, were those which are still held today within the HRM and which Albertini defends.

(Acts 18:28) for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.

      • Are the words of God blind men? consider acts 5:34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought. 37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, [even] as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.

The “experts” of that day could not disprove the truth, so they tried to silence it… Whether HRM is true or false, we should be willing to discard all traditions of men (both Jewish AND Christian) and walk in Truth no matter what. Sticking our heads in the sand or plugging our ears when someone is quoting scripture is to hate (possible) correction.

It appears to an outside observer of this discussion that there is a lot of miscommunication and continued dialogue would be beneficial IF we are ALL interested in truth. If ones goal is to be right (at all costs),if they have God all figured out, their ego and lack of integrity will manifest itself. Rather we should be like the noble Bareans who searched the scriptures to prove him, instead of the Thesalonians who called Paul a heritic and tried to silence him instead of prove/disproving him.

  7. I thank you all for your thought provoking comments and insight. It has been well established that The HRM is heretical and should in no way be associated with the Christian faith. It is impossible in reasoning with those who are entrenched in its teachings. The word they subscribe to is so deeply altered to reflect their own belief system that the true, simple and authoritative reference (the bible) can never be a common basis for discussion. Whatever scripture refutes or nullifies their teaching is simply ignored or, more likely, responded to with their favorite phrase – ‘that was mistranslated’. For this reason, I will go no further in my own explanation of the HRM, nor will I ask any questions of its followers.

I would (if it’s allowed – I’m not really sure, since I rarely post things on the internet) like to ask that fellow brothers and sisters in Christ pray for these lost lambs. Pray for their hearts and souls and minds to be opened up to the sickness of this movement and the deception of its leaders. I ask this for all these people, but I personally ask it for my own wonderful, beautiful wife, who has sadly been swept into the false teachings of the HRM. I have begged and pleaded with her, but it is of no avail now, and everyday I lose a little more of her. The leader of their local meeting place (I will NOT give credence to those call it a church) has destroyed her faith and replaced it with self righteousness, elitism and legalism. She is only a shell of her former self. The girl I married is long gone. It’s from pure desperation that I ask this. Pray for all who have been deceived by this terrible movement. It would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you, and peace be to all of you who find hope, grace and salvation through the atoning work of Christ on the cross.
