Hear This: A Pastor Who Protects His Sheep From Wolves

Act 20:29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;

By Amy Spreeman

Here is something we don’t come across very often: A pastor protecting his flock from the latest heresies and fads that are sweeping Christendom through popular books, teachings and teachers leading millions off the path of Truth. I first heard this preacher from  First Baptist Church of Johnson City, NY last weekend after several friends shared it with me.  I was personally touched and impacted by Pastor Jim Murphy’s gracious and humble but firm conviction to stand on God’s Word and nothing else.

He titled his message, The Subtlety of Satan.

Telling his flock, “we’re going to root this stuff out of our ministry,” Pastor Jim’s message to his congregation last Sunday must have surely come at a cost. Any time a preacher names names and sounds the alarm, there will be warfare. But Jim knows where the buck stops:

I’m responsible for this ministry. I will be called a tyrant, a fundamentalist, controlling – you fill in the blanks – I don’t care anymore. We’re going to be making some changes and we’re going to root this stuff out of our ministry because it is unacceptable. It is not biblical Christianity and we’re going to get back to the Bible. I’m not going to make a lot of friends.”

I have been personally recommending this excellent sermon, and I encourage you to absorb what this man of God is telling his sheep. You’ll want to make sure you listen all the way to the end. I hope you are as challenged, as humbled and as encouraged as I’ve been:

  1. I must concur – I was humbled . What a gift he is to his congretation. I could truly sense his burden and pain for defending the truth and was encouraged by it. Thank you so much for this and my prayer too is that I, we, will become Bible centred and discerning disciples of Jesus Christ alone. To stand up when it matters and to be courageous.
