I do not Allow a Woman to Teach… (1Timothy 2:12-15)

This is a good listen and the explanation is very clear. I have listened to this again and decided to post it for all my Christian lady friends and also for their spouses. May you be blessed and see the Biblical truth.

1 Timothy 2:12-15 (New American Standard Bible)

12But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.
13For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
15But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

Examples of women “teachers” today: Joyce Meyer, Juanita Bynum, Paula White, Marilyn Hickey, Monica Dennington, Beth Moore, Lisa Bevere, Mary Manin Morrissey, Gloria Copeland

  1. Its interesting that the list of women teachers really proves verse 14 – not that all women are automatically deceived, but it seems that almost all women teachers/preachers ARE deceived. There are some good ones who have Titus 2 – type ministries that are good (like Nancy Leigh DeMoss), and thats also completely acceptable as long as they stay within whats prescribed for older Christian women in Titus 2 and their ministries are subject to the authority of their husbands and pastors.
    Thanks for posting this.

  2. It is always fascinating to observe, in real time and sometimes in writing, the reaction of true Christian women to the biblical instruction on this topic. At the same time it is humbling, heartwarming, a source of familiar restraint and a firm reminder to men, of the responsibility they carry in this regard.

It is particularly so when we, believing men, are in the company of mature and studious (Berean) Christian women and we realize, or should at least, that we would be wise to tread cautiously when voicing an eager “paternal” opinion which is not necessarily Biblical. At times we could end up with egg all over our face!

Sometimes it is also wonderful to observe the dexterity with which truly Berean women handle these types of situations with sincere men, those men who speak in a very meaty way, but really make a very milky point.

I would certainly love to hear more explanations from women who are opposed to the biblical prohibition on women teaching to mixed gender audiences and congregations. I have heard some explanations which are based on Old Testament scriptures, but which are always out of context and adapted to say something which they certainly do not.

I would love to hear a relevant and true Christian argument which explains away or voids the instruction in 1 Timothy 2:12-15. It would be particularly interesting to hear from men as well, those who agree with having women formally teach them. Biblical teaching, that is, of course not sewing lessons.

  3. This type of teaching can sure lead to abuse of women because we “need a man as our head.” Sorry, this topic John has gone way off the mark. Woman need as their head the Savior Jesus just as men do. Jesus is our savior, not any man. You all better watch how far this teaching goes, you look into the quiverfull movement and you’ll see the horrors of how far this goes. Get your mind right, get it on salvation through Christ alone, for everyone, the same. Women and men have different roles but that is between each husband and wife to work out in harmony with God, and anyone who tries to pin “roles” and bahavior and “headship” on everyone the same accross the board is really teaching slaveship of women. Again, you look at the oppressive religions, Islam, Quiverfull followers, Mormonism, they all have this “man is head” which really translates to “man is boss” and when drawn to its fullness subjects women and girls to slave status. Every Christian, either male or female, need Christ as their head, they follow Christ alone, there is no other salvation than through Christ, and they have responsibility to Christ. JUST like men. Be careful to keep this topic true to the BIble, not some man-made theory of male headship.

The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. (1 Corinthians 14:34-35)

If one goes against these instructions in the Word it is rejecting His Word.

You have not listened to the complete message. Do you believe in woman’s liberation movements ? This topic is clear in Scripture.

It is amazing that the ones who try to refute this claim as their “proof” –
      1. Extra-biblical sources
      2. The Bible is “wrong”
      3. Church history over the Word of God
      4. Personal feelings.
      5. The N.T. “Days” of “spirit vs. flesh” supercedes or abrogates the the very writings of the N.T. itself! (What a godless argument – yet, I receive it from “women preachers” all the time) Unbelievable.

I really struggled with this issue myself at one point in my life, but now that I’ve embraced what Scripture actually teaches, I’ve found it to be very freeing.

Nobody is saying that our salvation is in man – but we are to be in submisssion to our own husbands.
    Ephesians 5:
22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

    And 1 Peter 3:
1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

This is not the subjugation of women, but rather the different role that God has designed women for – a gloriously fulfilling one.

Scripture must be our final authority on these issues, and Scripture is very clear about the different roles for men and women. Its not about smarter/dumber or better/worse – its simply different. If we examine what the Scripture say about mens roles, its clear that they are NOT to lord it over us and subjugate us, better rather to love us as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25-33). If you really consider it – they have the tougher command.
It sounds to me like your issue is not with John MacArthur, but with Scripture itself – and therefore with God. All Scripture is inspired by God, and we need to carefully examine it and set aside our personal feelings.

A very well written answer and i commend you. I could not have said it any better. Thank You. At the end of the day if we adhere to what Scripture commands , we serve our Lord and Master, Jesus.

  5. Thank you all for responding to my comment. I have no problem with God nor his Word. I do however have a problem with extremism. You take a good look at the extreme fundamentalists, the quiverfull movement and you’ll see how far a teaching can be perverted. Do you all know of this movement? Have you researched it at all? I see nobody wanted to even denouce the quiverfull nonsense I mentioned above, and the abuse the women and girls suffer inside that ring of fire, but rather went to “correct” me where you think I need corrected, and even jumped right to women’s lib movement (which I detest). I am a God fearing born again believer who understands the equality of all people when they are in Christ. That said, I understand the beautiful design of a complete family, husband and wife and children and I embrace it with my whole heart. Please don’t miss the importance of my real point, which has nothing to do with womens lib, but rather with one of God’s principles that has in some circles been perverted so badly as to creat slave status for women.

    • I am very familiar with the quiverful movement, and I just don’t understand how that can be construed as abusive. If a woman desries to leave the size of her family up to God, isn’t she ultimately submitting to God? Is He not the author of life? A careful study a of Scripture reveals that children are always portrayed a blessings and barreness as a curse. Over and over we are told that God opens the womb and God closes the womb. No where in Scripture are we told to choose how many children to have or that we should even use birth control.
Why is it a problem for a woman to embrace these principles or for a couple to decide that’s how they want to handle family planning? I assure you, it is not a sin to have more than two children, nor is it a sin to not use birth control. We need to give these families the liberty to do what they feel is most honoring to God. Since it is not a sin, we have no right to condemn them for it, we must give them grace. With an abundance of Scripture in support of children, and the only time we see birth control used in Scripture God killed the man (Onan) for spilling his seed.

So, we need to give these families grace and not condemn them for living the same way the great men and women of faith in the Bible did.

  6. Its a shame their aint very many true Godly men out there!! Women wouldn’t have to step up and take the Godly male ordained roles if men would do it!! There are far too many single mothers, raising kids alone due to their husbands divorcing them, cheating, not ready to be dads and husbands etc… These women are now stepping up and teaching their children and friends about our Heavenly Father!!! I don’t think the Lord would dis-approve of this. But on the same note, mormons and muslims are not strictly biblical in any way and are an abomination to God!! They both teach mans authority over a woman in a slave-ship fashion. The bible teaches men to love their wives as Jesus loves the church. Its important not to get to leaglistic with this subject due to the lack of knowledge of christians which 90 percent are milk and not meat christians. Edification in Love is key!!!

I cannot agree with you. Point is woman are not to be allowed on the pulpits. Your points made about about the few godly men out there carries weight because the road is narrow and few are they that find it. The Bible clearly states woman are not to teach and usurp authority in the church over men. If one misses that Biblical view then it is choosing to ignore the Word of God. Why do you think the Apostle Paul wrote to the church. 1Ti_2:11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 1Ti_2:12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. As believers we must have a Biblical worldview not a secular world view. By saying we need not get “too legalistic” is ignoring the Word of God.
